– For just the second time in program history, the Tulane University football team will play in a bowl game in back-to-back seasons, as it accepted a bid today to play in the 2020 Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas, where it will face Southern Mississippi.

The 17th annual event will kickoff on Jan. 4, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. and will be aired live on ESPN.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for our student-athletes to compete in another first-class bowl game," head coach Willie Fritz said. "I know our coaches and staff will enjoy the bowl week in Fort Worth, Texas. We have a lot of respect for the Southern Mississippi program and we look forward to a great contest."

"Competing in bowl games on an annual basis is the new standard for Tulane Football," Director of Athletics Troy Dannen said. "The staff from the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl is committed to providing our student-athletes, coaches and staff with a memorable experience. We look forward to a great week in Fort Worth."

The Green Wave posted an impressive 5-1 record at home en route to earning a bowl bid for just the 13th time in its 126-year program history. The last time the Green Wave played in back-to-back bowl games was during the 1979-80 seasons.

"We are pleased to announce that Southern Miss and Tulane will be facing off in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl this year," Brant Ringler, the bowl's executive director, said. "We are looking forward to welcoming both programs and their great fans to Fort Worth to celebrate the New Year."

Tulane enters the game featuring one of the nation's top rushing attacks, averaging 249.8 yards per game – a figure that ranks 13th in the nation.

Tulane will take on Southern Mississippi for the 31st time in program history. The last matchup between the two teams took place back on Nov. 6, 2010.

The annual game has featured the "armed forces" theme since 2006. Patriotic overtones recognizing all five branches of service are prevalent throughout the game. Past Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowls have included fan-fest adventure areas showcasing armed forces hardware; flyovers; demonstrations by several of the military's top skydiving teams; custom homes awarded to wounded warriors; on-field induction ceremonies; armed forces bands and honor guards; and the annual Great American Patriot Award presented by Armed Forces Insurance.
